Cualquiera que viera a Norman Benotman tendría problemas para imaginarlo combatiendo a los soviéticos en Afganistán junto a Osama Bin Laden. Impecablemente vestido con un traje gris verdoso, con unos botines extraordinariamente relucientes, y unos modales exquisitos, Benotman se esfuerza por sonreír al interlocutor y explicar, en un inglés con logradísimo acento británico, por qué perteneció al Grupo Islámico Combatiente Libio (LIFG) o por qué intentó convencer a Bin Laden para que no atacara EE UU.
Benotman es musulmán y nació en Libia en 1967. Tras una juventud militante en movimientos yihadistas, desde los que colaboró con Al Qaeda, en el año 2000 decide desvincularse de esas organizaciones terroristas. Ahora vive en Londres con su mujer y sus tres hijos y trabaja activamente en la Quilliam Foundation donde intenta promover la cultura y el diálogo con los musulmanes en el Reino Unido. El jueves ofreció una conferencia sobre Al Qaeda en la Fundación Ortega y Gasset, allí atendió a 20minutos.es.
¿Por qué se unió a la causa de Bin Laden?
Yo pertenecía al Grupo Islámico Combatiente Libio (LIFG), un grupo yihadista, y cooperábamos con Al Qaeda y otros grupos yihadistas. No teníamos una agenda global para luchar contra el mundo, como Al Qaeda. Empecé con estas actividades de adolescente, quizá por eso he tenido la capacidad de ver lo que sucedía, de analizarlo.
¿En qué momento sintió que debía dejarlo?Tras las matanzas indiscriminadas de civiles en Argelia en 1997 por parte del Grupo Islámico Armado (GIA), que se convirtieron en una banda de criminales, aunque proclamaban que eran yihadistas y que servían al islam, me posiciono totalmente en contra. Estaba muy insatisfecho con el modo en que los grupos yihadistas se comportaban y cómo al final adoptaban modos de actuación cercanos a los gobiernos que criticábamos por su falta de transparencia. En el año 2000, ya en Afganistán, me reúno con Bin Laden y otros líderes yihadistas y les trasmito mi preocupación porque pienso que el movimiento yihadista, como se había venido desarrollando en los últimos 20 años, es un completo fracaso, y que deberíamos debatir el asunto con total transparencia como verdaderos musulmanes.
¿Cómo es Bin Laden?
Bin Laden como persona, como ser humano, es carismático, muy humilde, incluso muy tímido, es muy fácil para él estar una o dos horas sin hablar, solo escuchando y sonriendo. Es muy difícil provocarlo, incluso aunque te enfades con él y le grites, es capaz de mantener la calma y la sangre fría. Mucha gente se pregunta cómo una persona que es millonaria puede llevar la vida que él lleva, viviendo como un pobre, pero la civilización no existe en su esfera privada. No tiene electricidad, ni frigorífico. En Kandahar los veranos son muy calurosos y ni siquiera él permite a su familia tener un aparato de aire acondicionado. Decía que llegaría el momento en el que buscarían estos privilegios y lujos, pero no los encontrarían.
¿Dónde cree que está actualmente Bin Laden?Mi opinión personal es que está FATA, una región tribal entre Pakistán y Afganistán.
¿Cuántos Bin Laden desconocidos hay?
Creo que Bin Laden, como líder de la yihad global es irreemplazable. Si él desaparece nadie, ni siquiera Al Zawahiri, podría reemplazarlo, por su personalidad, su experiencia, su formación. Por su propio trabajo, a Bin Laden no le gusta recorrer el mundo, no es un general de cuatro estrellas. Además, desde el 11 de septiembre él tiene una única misión: permanecer con vida.
¿Por qué ha dicho que Al Zawahiri es más peligroso que Bin Laden?
Porque creo que la yihad egipcia, incluyendo a Al Zawahiri , es responsable de la radicalización de Al Qaeda hasta este nivel, especialmente de la radicalización de Bin Laden, que es una persona muy diferente a la que era a comienzos de los años 90. Entonces no hubiera aceptado las matanzas, o el nivel de actividades terroristas que se llevan ahora a cabo en nombre de Al Qaeda. En los últimos 20 años la ideología extremista de la yihad egipcia ha influenciado a Al Qaeda, pero al mismo tiempo Bin Laden les ha influido a ellos porque les ha hecho aceptar una agenda global. La yihad egipcia tenía carácter local, luchaban solo contra el régimen egipcio, en el que querían instaurar su propia estado islámico. Pero los servicios secretos egipcios pudieron controlarlos y anularlos, por lo que decidieron unirse a Bin Laden y aceptar su agenda global solo para poder sobrevivir.
Usted y el Grupo Islámico Combatiente Libio (LIFG) intentaron convencer a Bin Laden para que no atacara los EE UU porque pensaba que sería contraproducente para el mundo musulmán.
Siempre estuvimos en contra de una yihad global, de una lucha contra todo el mundo; porque es como decirle a la gente que luche, allá donde esté, en cuanto tenga la menor oportunidad. Es increíble. Además de que el concepto en sí mismo, independientemente de sus implicaciones religiosas, no se puede manejar desde el punto de vista estratégico, y es lo que estamos viendo ahora, que va por libre, Aparte de que si vemos los resultados de esta estrategia, se ha dañado al mundo musulmán de distintas maneras, cuando provocas a países como los EE UU, se defienden quieras o no con todo lo que tengan.
¿Cree que la yihad está justificada en algunas circunstancias, como un medio de autodefensa?
La yihad es una táctica muy peligrosa. No es un concepto ideológico, mucha gente lo malinterpreta, es una táctica militar, a un nivel muy básico; pero la idea original de yihad es el terrorismo. Pero lo que hay que entender es que desde el punto de vista político no se va a conseguir nada con el terrorismo. Muchos grupos, hace 50 ó 60 años, con diferentes puntos de partida políticos, también en Europa, se han servido del terrorismo para intentar conseguir sus objetivos, pero yo creo que no se puede confiar mucho en el terrorismo, porque al final tus tácticas te superan, lo pierdes todo y terminas como un criminal. El terrorismo es muy peligroso porque la idea es que actúas por violencia, pero sin límites. Y esto también se aplica a los Gobiernos que utilizan sus agencias de inteligencia o sus servicios secretos para matar a alguien. Esto también es terrorismo y es tremendo porque después no hay nadie a quien culpar, nadie a quien juzgar, el límite es el cielo.
¿Alguna vez pensó en inmolarse?
No, nunca he creído en esa idea. Siempre he tenido muchas dudas religiosas sobre la inmolación. No la acepto.
¿Cree que Al Qaeda del Magreb Islámico, que secuestró a los cooperantes españoles, es la mayor amenaza terrorista islámica que tiene España?
No. La amenaza terrorista está ahí, en muchos países europeos, pero el nivel de amenaza, y esto es importante, cómo medirlo, es distinto. Y no creo que España esté en el mismo nivel ahora de amenaza que el Reino Unido, Alemania o Francia, que afrontan un riesgo muy alto, mucho mayor que el que tiene España.
¿Por qué cree eso?
Llegar a esta conclusión es un proceso complejo, pero al final se trata de eso, de ser capaz de cuantificar el peligro. De saber si se trata de una amenaza lejana o va a suceder pronto. Pero ahora España no está en ese nivel porque Al Qaeda cree, no sé si con razón o no, pero cree que ellos contribuyeron a que la derrota del Gobierno en el 2004 y están contentos, están satisfechos porque piensan que la sociedad española no está en contra de ellos. Pero esta escala que mide el peligro cambia, es decir, no quiere decir que esta situación vaya a seguir siempre así. Otro factor positivo para Al Qaeda es cómo manejó España la liberación de los dos cooperantes secuestrados, de una forma para ellos mucho más satisfactoria a como lo hizo Francia. Y es así como ellos creen que deben comportarse todos los países europeos, como lo hizo España. Disfrutan con esto. Y no es algo que piense yo, son los hechos, yo tengo mi propia opinión de este asunto, pero es cómo piensan ellos.
Usted, en determinados círculos (con sus apariciones televisivas en la CNN o Al Jazeera) se ha convertido en un rostro popular de la lucha contra Al Qaeda. ¿Alguna vez ha temido por su vida?
Si pensara en ello, no haría lo que hago, porque ese el verdadero sentido del terrorismo: el miedo, trasmitir miedo para vencer, hacer que la gente se embargue de este miedo, le afecte, incluso cuando esté en su casa, por eso le advierto a la gente que no lo permita. Dos días después de los atentados en los autobuses del Reino Unido, la gente seguía con sus vidas, iba al trabajo, como si nada hubiera sucedido, eso demuestra que la violencia es un fracaso, a pesar de la pérdida de vidas humanas, y que la gente puede vencer al terrorismo, venciendo el miedo. Los londinenses vencieron al terrorismo.
Usted tiene tres hijos, de 11, 9 y 7 años ¿qué les cuenta sobre su vida, sobre su pasado?
Los tres nacieron en Londres, trato de asegurarme de que mantienen su identidad original, como musulmanes, pero también están muy influenciados por la cultura británica, son europeos musulmanes y he insistido en que vayan a un colegio donde puedan mezclarse con niños de todo tipo, cristianos… y vivir la multiculturalidad.
¿Cuáles cree que son los principales errores que EE UU y Europa están cometiendo en relación a Al Qaeda?
No sé si se está cometiendo algún error, pero creo que hay cosas contraproducentes… hay ciertas cosas que se hacen con fines antiterroristas, que en realidad obedecen a otro tipo de estrategias. Yo dudo de la conveniencia de las operaciones militares a gran escala para combatir el terrorismo. El mayor error es la guerra contra el terrorismo (War against terrorism). Y gracias a dios la mayoría de las potencias extranjeras están abandonando poco a poco esta idea. En el Reino Unido ya no se utiliza más ese término, War against terrorism. Es legítimo que los países intenten protegerse, pero la manera que tengan de hacerlo, de establecer su estrategias, puede sin querer reforzar ideológicamente a Al Qaeda y ayudarles a reclutar gente. La lucha contra el terrorismo debe ser una lucha de los servicios de inteligencia, no una lucha militar.

El Consejo Consultivo Muyahidin dice en un comunicado colocado en internet: "Les decimos a los adoradores de la cruz que continuaremos nuestra Yihad y nunca nos detendremos hasta que Dios nos avale para cortar su cuello y enarbolar la bandera del Islam hasta gobernar en todos los pueblos y naciones" Sólo entonces lo único aceptable será la conversión o la muerte por la espada".

De Hamas a Al Qaeda
Cada vez más radicales, palestinos se pasan al grupo de Bin Laden para atacar a Israel
Un miliciano explica el cambio de bando en la aparente liviandad con que la Resistencia Islámica palestina se relacionaría con los judíos, en contra de lo que -afirma- ordena el Corán. Insertarse en la población árabe-israelí es clave para posteriormente perpetrar atentados.
Hace meses que el presidente de la Autoridad Nacional Palestina (ANP), Mahmoud Abbas, afirma que Al Qaeda gana protagonismo en Gaza y Cisjordania. Sin embargo, la penetración de la organización de Osama bin Laden parece más profunda de lo que se pensaba. Recientes testimonios señalan que cientos de activistas de Hamas están desertando hacia el nuevo brazo de Al Qaeda en la Franja.
La detención el 1 de junio en Israel de Abdel Rahman Talalka, de 25 años, refleja la gravedad del cisma entre los islamistas más radicales. Este destacado integrista de Gaza, que se reunió personalmente en varias ocasiones con los fundadores de Hamas era un mujahidín (miliciano de la Jihad) del brazo armado de la organización palestina. Los interrogadores israelíes no lo podían creer cuando descubrieron que Talalka no actuaba en nombre de Hamas, sino de la facción Al Jaljala, de Al Qaeda.
“Hamas no es suficientemente religioso y por eso yo, que me licencié en estudios islámicos en la universidad, me pasé con muchos de mis compañeros a Al Qaeda. Aquí sabemos que según el Corán el objetivo es la lucha armada y matar judíos”, explicó. Talalka reveló, además, que la Resistencia Islámica reaccionó violentamente ante estas deserciones y los amenazó de muerte.
El joven pasó a la clandestinidad y empezó a usar el nombre de Abbas. Los entrenamientos de Al Qaeda tuvieron lugar en una casa abandonada de Rafah, donde, además, le enseñaron a fabricar explosivos, por ejemplo, a partir de medicinas.
PELIGROSA LISTA
El islamista se había infiltrado en Israel para planificar atentados suicidas y ataques con coches-bomba en comisarías, centros comerciales, bases militares, paradas de autobús y rascacielos, así como para secuestrar y asesinar a soldados en las carreteras, enterrar sus cuerpos y señalar el lugar con un GPS para que los cadáveres pudieran ser canjeados por presos palestinos.
Le entregaron un teléfono móvil con varias tarjetas SIM para no ser localizado ni por Hamas ni por Israel. Para ayudarle a mezclarse con la población árabe-israelí, le ordenaron comprar un carné de identidad falso de ciudadanos beduinos. Sus jefes le enseñaron también a hacer frente a posibles interrogatorios del Shin Bet -el servicio de inteligencia interior israelí- en caso de ser capturado.
Sus responsables en Gaza acordaron con Talalka varios tipos de mensajes SMS que serían enviados en clave. “Los niños no tienen dinero” era el texto para cuando la infraestructura de atentados estuviese preparada y sólo faltaran los fondos para ejecutarlos. Cuando lograra entrar en Israel por la frontera egipcia, el mensaje a enviar sería: “¿Cómo están mamá y papá, yo llegué a mi novia”.
Asimismo, le pidieron que informara inmediatamente de cada atentado para poder reivindicarlos y le entregaron una lista de farmacias, tiendas de materiales agrícolas e instituciones médicas en las que podría comprar medicamentos y productos para fabricar los explosivos y los cinturones suicidas.
PREFERENCIAS INTEGRISTAS
Hace un mes y medio, Talalka pasó uno de los túneles subterráneos secretos que unen Rafah con Egipto y vivió un corto período en el desierto del Sinaí. Otro miembro de la célula le dio mil dólares para pagar a un contrabandista profesional de origen beduino.
Por la noche, ambos se infiltraron a pie, caminando decenas de kilómetros hasta Kadesh Barnea. Luego Talalka tomó un autobús en dirección a Beersheba. El 1 de junio fue arrestado en la carretera.
En los interrogatorios del Shin Bet, el miliciano confesó que su objetivo era movilizar a integristas árabe-israelíes para cometer una serie de atentados, pues según él, hoy en día es más fácil movilizar activistas para Al Qaeda, ya que se trata de “la organización más respetada y gloriosa del mundo islámico”.
¿“Hezbolización” del Ejército libanés?
El gobierno israelí advirtió ayer que teme una posible “Hezbolización” del ejército libanés, dos días después de que un enfrentamiento en la frontera -el más grave desde 2006- finalizara con cuatro muertos. “Si el Hezbollah logra controlar (a las tropas libanesas), tendremos que tratarlas de un modo muy distinto”, afirmó el viceministro de Relaciones Exteriores, Danny Ayalon. Ya el miércoles, el Primer Ministro israelí había advertido a algunos de sus vecinos: “Quiero dejar claro a Hamas y al gobierno del Líbano que los consideramos responsables de las provocaciones violentas contra nuestros soldados. No pongan a prueba nuestra determinación de defender a los ciudadanos y soldados del Estado de Israel”.
Ello, en alusión a la escaramuza desatada en un sector fronterizo donde el ejército israelí quería talar un árbol. La ONU afirmó tras las primeras indagaciones que el árbol se encontraba en la frontera entre ambos países, “del lado israelí”, pero en una zona en la que “el gobierno libanés expresa reservas respecto al (trazado) de la Línea Azul”, establecida para servir de frontera tras la retirada -luego de 22 años- del ejército israelí del sur del Líbano en mayo del 2000.
